Curated Resource Collective for The Mindful Lens Gallery

An old rusting car car body sits in a field with thick weeds growing up around it as it reclaimed by nature.

Welcome to the curated resource collective for The Mindful Lens Gallery. This space is a living archive of the minimalist photography gear that informs my creative practice and philosophy. I believe that mindfulness isn’t just a mindset—it is reflected in the physical things we choose to bring into our lives.

My photographic philosophy relies on aiming for Straight Out of Camera (SOOC) JPEG images, or JPEGs with minimal post-processing. By designing custom color recipes, fine-tuning monochrome parameters, or accepting light exactly as the sensor receives it, I step away from hours behind a computer screen. This choice requires embracing  creative constraints in the field, aligning perfectly with the wabi-sabi appreciation for the fleeting, beautiful, and unaltered present moment.

Through the Lens: Minimalist Photography Gear

My minimalist photography kit is fluid and has changed naturally over time to match my creative evolution, but my focus on minimalist, in-camera execution remains fixed.  The primary archive of images displayed across this website was captured using a shared ecosystem of soulfully characterful systems. I have spent years testing and operating compact camera setups across my global travels throughout North America, Europe, and the Caribbean.  I have found that the more compact and minimalistic the physical setup, the more present and mindful my photographic experience becomes.  This realization has led me to my current, exclusive field tools: the Ricoh GR IV Monochrome and the Ricoh GR IIIx HDF.  I believe this dual-compact ecosystem represents the ultimate framework for high-quality, zero-friction minimalist photography.

Gritty black and white image of urban or rural decay with an old easy chair sitting on ground covered with dried fallen leaves, in front of a textured cement block wall and next to two skinny bare tree trunks. Wabi-sabi grit and texture.

Ricoh GR IV Monochrome

  • The Mindful Purpose: My dedicated, zero-friction tool for raw micro-contrast, stark geometric lines, and capturing the wabi-sabi textures of urban and rural decay.
  • Field Context: I rely on this true monochrome sensor during my travel loops through weathered European backstreets, rural countrysides, and abandoned Caribbean coastal ruins to strip away color distractions completely.
  • Where to Find It: Available new on Amazon or through verified secondhand inspection platforms like MPB and KEH Camera.
Rural image of a stream passing through a crumbling and broken stone dam and leading directly to the camera view. Grasses grow in the water and on the banks were plants and trees also grow with rich and muted autumn colors of gold, red, brown and soft green.

Ricoh GR IIIx HDF

  • The Mindful Purpose: My primary instrument for soft, atmospheric color storytelling and capturing high-frame-rate video frames for ambient website video loops and cinemagraphs.
  • Field Context: The built-in Highlight Diffusion Filter (HDF) gracefully softens morning mist and harsh sun flares during my slow forest bathing treks.

Note: For those who prefer color flexibility over a dedicated monochrome sensor, I recommend the standard Ricoh GR IV, which pairs beautifully with creative recipes.

View inside an old and large library room looking down the length of a long wooden table with a door and clock behind it. Floor to ceiling book shelves and are also made of wood. Two ladders lean against the book stacks to reach the highest shelves. The room has a formal and old world look to it.
